A heel spur is actually a calcium deposit that has created a bony protrusion on the bottom of the heel bone. It is generally easy to detect as it can be seen on an x-ray. If the heel spur cannot be seen on an x-ray, the condition may be referred to as heel spur syndrome. A heel spur is commonly associated with plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of the connective tissues that run along the bottom of the foot and connect the heel bone and the ball of the foot. There are many different treatments for heel spurs in addition to custom orthotics. Treatments can include exercise, anti-inflammatory medications, and cortisone injections. When these treatments are not effective, our foot surgeon may need to provide our patient with foot surgery to stop the heel spur pain problem.
